Well here’s the thing, health is about SO much more than just completing your WODs in the gym. Whilst getting strong and physically fit are awesome, and a fantastic starting point in achieving health, it’s just the start.
If you’re anything like me, you likely feel like there are aspects of your health could use a little improvement. Whether you are struggling with your weight, or feeling tired when you wake up in the morning, or you wish you could sleep better at night, most of us would love to crank our health up a notch in one or more ways, and the first thing to understand is this:
There are MANY factors that influence our overall health and well-being (including food, movement, recovery, sleep, stress management, play, meditation, socialization and adequate safe sun exposure). The key is finding a balance of all of these factors so our bodies have the chance to reestablish our natural state of being and return to a state of perfect health.
You’ve already taken a HUGE step in the right direction just being here, so give yourself a high five. But here’s the thing, movement (or exercise) is just one of those factors (albeit an important one). Do you really want to half-ass this wellness thing, or do you want to grab it by the horns and really GET IT?!
I used to work out 5-6 times a week, and HARD. I thought I was being so disciplined by pushing myself super hard in the gym, only to find that I was feeling less and less good in my body as time went on. I’d wake up in the morning barely able to get out of bed, and then crash into an energy slump at 3pm. My body felt like it was betraying me even though I felt like I was being SO disciplined by pushing myself so hard every day. It was then that I realized I needed to take a step back and refocus my approach.
I realized that If I was hoping to be truly, deeply, healthy I needed to be nourishing myself in ways other than just working harder. This liberated me in so many ways, and I now feel better and more full of energy than I ever felt (and this is with a teething baby).
